What happens at the campfire?|September 2020

Our free monthly campfire is tonight. This time we’re going to hold it in the backyard with a real campfire! I hope you can join us! Here’s the link to register for the Zoom call.

And here’s what goes on when you get there:
I offer a poem or reading about the time of year, the season. We say hello and share what we’re drinking tonight. You meet a bunch of cool people from all over who have either been in my circle for a while or are joining for the first time. There might be park rangers, naturalists and historians I work with, people who heard me sing at a concert or attended a wellness weekend, or participants from one of my classes on sense of place creativity and writing.

I give a story prompt which helps you imagine a place with descriptive details and go there in your mind’s eye. Then people share their stories, taking us on journeys: witnessing the light on the Tetons in the morning, the time a California condor with its 10-foot wingspan flew beside the road turnout and changed their life, the time when someone was so small the dandelion was as high as their knees, the time when they paddled around a lake and the wind came up, but they made it to shore and somehow knew everything was going to be okay. Stories of awe, hope and resilience.

All these stories somehow link to each other and create a theme for the evening. I sing a song and maybe offer a closing poem. People feel nourished. Connected. Seen. Better than they have all week. For an hour, everything else fades away. It’s laid-back. It’s fun. It’s soulful. Just like a campfire should be. Hope to see you there!

BTW: You can even come in your PJs with your hair messed up. You can pop in and check it out.

When I asked attendees “What was your favorite part of the campfire?" Here's what they said:

  • "Connecting warmly with other human beings, with people who truly want to be here and brought their whole selves to this, so generously."

  • "The storytelling and all the vignettes, all the places I feel like I went because of it."

  • "A sense of community around the campfire."

  • "The people definitely the people we're all getting together. We're sharing. We're enjoying each other's company."
